The History of Apple’s iPad Air

The iPad Air is Apple’s fifth generation tablet computer, and it was made from 100% recyclable aluminum. It was released in 2013 and features a design that is thinner than the iPad Mini 2, yet has the same 64-bit Apple A7 processor. It runs on the iOS 7 operating system.

The iPad Air can act as a hotspot with some carriers, by sharing its connection over Wi-Fi, USB, or Bluetooth. Siri, Mail, Photos, Safari, iTunes, Notes, Game Center, Calendar, and more are accessible. Users can also access the Apple App Store.

The design changed with the iPad Air. This was the major design change for the iPad for quite some time. There is a front facing camera that was upgraded to iSight, and it has a 5MP CMOS hybrid IR filter. The screen featured a 9.7” LED-backlight multi-touch.

  • In production in 2013 and 2014
  • Resolution: 2048 x 1536 “Retina”
  • Memory options: 1 GB
  • Flash drive options: 16, 32, 64, or 128 GB

The iPad Air 2 came out in 2014, and it still had the same 9.7” LED-backlit multi-touch screen of the first iPad Air. The difference with this iPad Air is that it is lighter and thinner than the previous iteration. It’s also more powerful, with the addition of a Touch ID and NFC chip which supports Apple Pay. There were three color options available: white/silver, black/space gray, or white/gold.

  • Production started in 2014
  • Resolution: 2048 x 1536 “Retina”
  • Memory options start at 1 GB
  • Flash drive options: either 16, 32, or 128 GB
